MGMP Sleman in Collaboration with Sasing USD Empower English Teachers to Stay Relevant in the AI Era

The atmosphere was warm and full of enthusiasm as English teachers from across Sleman gathered for an MGMP training session centered on a theme “Becoming an Irreplaceable English Teacher in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” The session led by Dr. FX. Risang Baskara, M.Hum., invited participants to reflect, question, and reimagine their roles in today’s changing educational world.


From the very beginning, the training acknowledged a reality many teachers have already felt that technology, especially Generative AI, is no longer something distant. It is already present in classrooms, in students’ devices, and in the way learning happens. Instead of approaching this shift with fear, the session encouraged teachers to see AI as a partner rather than a competitor. The key message was teachers are not being replaced, but they are being called to evolve.

One of the most engaging parts of the session was the discussion on how teaching does not happen in isolation. Every classroom is shaped by its own context, teachers’ confidence with technology, students’ abilities and access, and the overall school environment. This idea helped participants realize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to using AI. What matters most is understanding their own teaching context and adapting accordingly.



The session also introduced a framework known as the Trisula Pedagogy. Rather than overwhelming participants with theory, it was presented as a practical guide. Teachers explored how learning today is about connecting information, building knowledge together, and integrating technology into teaching. These ideas helped reinforce that good teaching is not about using the latest tools, but about using them meaningfully. The training also offered practical classroom ideas. From helping students develop writing with AI support to designing activities that promote critical thinking, teachers were given examples they could adapt to their own classrooms. Technology should support learning, not replace the human connection that teachers bring.

At the closing, participants were invited to reflect on their own journey, whether they are just starting to explore AI, already using it in small ways, or ready to innovate further. This moment of reflection created a sense of shared growth and reminded everyone that learning is an ongoing process. This MGMP activity became a space for encouragement and collaboration. By embracing change while staying grounded in meaningful pedagogy, English teachers in Sleman are well on their way to remaining not only relevant, but truly irreplaceable.
