SGB 2026: Learning and Sharing Through English

Learning a language becomes more meaningful when it is shared with others. With this excitement, the English Letters Department of Sanata Dharma University once again held its community program, Sastra Gives Back (SGB), in 2026.

The program took place at Mustika Tama Orphanage in Bantul and was held once a week for a month, on February 21, February 28, March 7, and March 14. Through this program, university students had the opportunity to share their English knowledge while interacting directly with the children at the orphanage.

A total of 10 volunteers participated in the program. They were divided into three groups based on the students’ levels: kindergarten (TK), elementary school (SD), and senior high school (SMA). Each group was responsible for preparing the learning materials and making the environment more enjoyable.

The first meetings on February 21 and February 28 focused on introducing basic English and simple daily communication. To make the learning process more enjoyable, the volunteers prepared colorful worksheets, fun games, and ice-breaking activities. These activities helped the students feel more comfortable to interact and to make them feel confident by talking in English.

During the sessions, the volunteers also observed how the students communicated and how confident they were in using English. This helped the volunteers understand the students’ abilities and adjust their teaching methods to suit the way they want to learn English.

In the end, SGB 2026 became a meaningful experience for both the students and the volunteers. The children were able to learn English in a fun and supportive environment, while the volunteers gained valuable insights from interacting with the community. The program was not only about teaching English, but also about understanding each other and learning new things together. (Lea Belicia/244214077)
