Faculty of Letters Marks 33 Years with Culture, Poetry, and a Call for Humanistic Relevance

Yogyakarta – Students and lecturers gathered anew for the peak celebration of Dies Natalis that was held in the Seminar Driyarkara Room at Campus 2, Universitas Sanata Dharma, Mrican. The commemoration marked the 33rd anniversary of the Faculty of Letters and featured a series of cultural and academic events that took place on Monday (04/05), from 11:00 up to 13:00 WIB.

The event was officially opened by the dean of faculty, Dr. Tatang Iskarna. Later on, it was followed with a traditional Golek Ayun-Ayun dance performed by a student from the undergraduate program. The performance highlighted Javanese cultural heritage as part of the celebration. The Rector of Universitas Sanata Dharma also delivered remarks, emphasizing the importance of literature and the humanities for the future of both the university and the country.

A speech was presented by Dr. Heri Priyatmoko, who shared the origin and historical journey behind the establishment and development of the Faculty of Letters. His comments provided deep insight on the sacrifices and contributions figures from the older generation made to making the Faculty of Letters what it is today. The event continued with a poetry reading, where two students from the Indonesian Letters Department performed three poems for the occasion. Adding a literary element to the occasion.

The chairperson of the English Letters Student Association (HMPSSING), Mikhail Hafid, also shared his thoughts, “Dies Natalis is, of course, a celebration of our university's anniversary but also a reminder of everything our university has gone through over the years. I hope, as Romo said earlier, it will grow to be even more meaningful. As a faculty of humanities, I hope we can contribute even more in the future, especially in the midst of disruption and the challenges of the times. As we know, the relevance of faculty in the humanities field is being questioned today in this country.”

Aisa Ayusakya Wurni, a participant of the event, commented, “The reason I came here is because of the tagline itself—‘changing the culture of this nation’—which I find quite interesting, especially given everything that is happening in this era. It turns out that literature still needs to be strengthened and that it remains important. That's why I came here today."

The celebration concluded with a musical performance by ELMO, which entertained the audience with several songs. The event ended with a buffet held outside, providing an opportunity for students and lecturers to gather. Concluding the 33rd Dies Natalis with a festive and casual setting. (DZ)
