English Debate Society (EDS) of Universitas Sanata Dharma Meets Muhammadiyah English Debating Society (MEDS) of Muhammadiyah  Universitas Surakarta in a Sparring Session

As iron sharpens iron, so do we as humans with our minds. Debating is an effective form for us to not only build our critical thinking, confidence, but also our ability to communicate and relay information clearly and effectively. Sparring debate between two universities is a great activity to build not only our minds, but also relations as we can widen our network of people who are outside of our region. The English Debate Society (EDS) of Universitas Sanata Dharma in collaboration with Muhammadiyah English Debating Society (MEDS) of Muhammadiyah  Universitas Surakarta held an in-person sparring session on the 13th of September.
The sparring session involved four teams, two divisions, one team for an English debate and a second team for an Indonesian debate, each team had two speakers, an opening speaker, and a closing speaker. The debate format was British parliamentary for both divisions.

The sparring session aimed to improve each team’s critical thinking skills with motion tackling political anarchy such as “This house believes that raiding during a riot is justified”. The interaction showed the level of expertise the two teams have on the subject, with both sides providing valid argument and level of detail in relaying their thoughts. This sparring session was a good start to their relations with each other to improve university students’ debating skills and also gave them experience as debaters. (JV)
