English Letters Students Supports Yayasan Taman Cipta Karya Nusantara (TCKN) and Hong Kong Medical Outreachers' Free Medical Check-ups for Elderly Residents across Several Areas in Yogyakarta

Twelve students from the English Letters program of Sanata Dharma University have completed a week-long interpreter volunteer program in collaboration with Yayasan Taman Cipta Karya Nusantara (TCKN). The event, held from August 3 to August 9, 2025, brought together the students and 18 Medical Outreachers (MO) from Hong Kong to deliver free medical check-ups for elderly residents across several areas in Yogyakarta. Preparation for the program began on Friday, July 25, 2025, with a training session aiming to provide volunteers with essential medical vocabulary and interpreter skills. While the activities run for six days, no schedule on August 6, giving participants a small break in the middle of the week.

The medical outreach started on Sunday, August 3, in Plemburan Condong Catur and Senkang Condong Catur. The next day, on Monday, August 4, the team served elderly people in Tegalrejo Nganglik, and moved on to Kentolan and Watugedug, Bantul, on Tuesday, August 5. On Thursday, August 7, they offered services in Turi and then had a meeting (makrab) inside the TCKN building to establish relationships between volunteers and medical outreaches. The program continued on Friday, August 8, at a Pesantren Bumi Cendekia and ended on Saturday, August 9, at the Sanjaya Catholic Boarding House in Pakem. Throughout the program, English Letters students were helping to enable effective communication between the visiting medical team and the local community.

This Collaboration aims to improve healthcare access for the elderly while promoting cultural exchange between Indonesian and International students. By serving as interpreters, the English Letters students helped to overcome language barriers and ensured that medical consultations went successfully. For many volunteers, the experience went beyond translation; it was an opportunity to practice empathy, teamwork, and adaptability in real-world situations. (BE)
