English Literature Department Holds Handover Ceremony: A Moment of Leadership Regeneration and Faculty Development

Yogyakarta – A warm and grateful atmosphere filled the Meeting Room of the English Literature Department at Sanata Dharma University (USD) on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. In a semi-formal event, the academic community of the English Literature Department gathered to celebrate three important milestones at once: the handover of the Vice Head of Department position, a farewell for lecturers pursuing further studies, and a welcome for a returning scholar.

The event, led directly by the Head of the English Literature Department, FX. Risang Baskara M.Hum., Ph.D., was attended by nearly all faculty members. In his opening remarks, Mr. Risang stated that there were many things to be grateful for as an academic community. "Today is a moment to express thanks, to welcome new duties, and to celebrate the academic achievements of our colleagues," he remarked.
The main agenda was the transfer of duties for the Vice Head of Department. The department officially expressed its gratitude for the service of Mr. Simon Arsa Manggala, S.S., M.Hum., who had held the position since 2021. Subsequently, the leadership baton was passed to Ms. Epata Puji Astuti, S.S., M.A., who assumed the new role effectively on August 1, 2025.

In his farewell speech, Mr. Simon expressed his appreciation for the cooperation he had experienced during his term. A symbolic moment marked the handover, where he presented a folder containing the financial accountability reports for student activities to Ms. Epata. This was followed by a brief address from Ms. Epata, who stated her readiness to continue the work and contribute to the department.
The atmosphere of camaraderie grew as other lecturers shared their impressions and messages, both to appreciate Mr. Simon's performance and to encourage Ms. Epata in her new role.
The event then continued with a farewell session for three lecturers who will be pursuing their doctoral degrees (S3). They are Ms. Anna Fitriati, S.Pd., M.Hum., who will continue her studies in Yogyakarta; Ms. Elisabeth Oseanita Pukan, S.S., M.A., who will be departing for the United States; and Ms. Wedhowerti, S.Pd., M.Hum., who will undertake her studies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The three lecturers delivered their farewell words and were met with prayers and messages of support from their colleagues.

The ceremony also served to welcome back Dr. Arina Isti'anah, S.Pd., who has successfully completed her doctoral studies in Linguistics at Gadjah Mada University. To conclude, Mr. Risang also shared the joyful news that throughout July 2025, the English Literature Department had successfully graduated over 80 students from their final thesis defenses. "This is an achievement we should all be grateful for and a sign of the excellent momentum for our department moving forward," he concluded.

Thank you for your dedicated service, Mr. Simon, and the best of luck in embracing your new duties, Ms. Epata. A warm welcome back is extended to Dr. Arina, and congratulations to Ms. Anna, Ms. Ose, and Ms. Wedho on embarking on your further studies. (RBP)
