A Story from Sona: Live the Campus Life

This is a story of Marselinus Sona Lastono. Marsel was a student of the English Letters Department batch 2018 and graduated in June 2022 after defended his undergraduate thesis on linguistics stream. Now, he is a personal assistant for Jerome Polin, an educational content-creator from Indonesia known for his content as a mathematic expert. Marsel started his career after graduating by joining Mantappu Corp as a Project Officer intern in February 2022. Satisfied with his work, the company called Marsel to work full-time in Jakarta from June 2022 until September 2022. Since then, Marsel again proved that he was worthy, until now he has become Jerome Polin’s Personal Assistant. Marsel said that he was not expecting that he would work as Jerome’s personal assistant. He said that his dream job was to be able to travel around places, as simple as that. Gratefully, he got more than he expected.
Remembering his study time at the English Letters Department in Universitas Sanata Dharma, Marsel also mentioned that the courses he took in the department help him in his current job. He mentioned courses like Business Writing and Culture of English-Speaking Nations help him get deals with international clients. Joining a student club like English Debating Society also helps him learn the way of thinking, problem solving, and delivering an opinion.

Marsel was known as an active student. He joined many activities on campus like Paduan Suara Mahasiswa Cantus Firmus USD, HMPS Sasing, English Debating Society (EDS), English Letters Music Organization (ELMO), and English Letters Competition and Festival (Elcomfest). He also got selected to receive a scholarship from PT Djarum, which is known as BESWAN DJARUM. As he joined so many activities, he was challenged to learn to manage his time. He said that it is important to become an active student, so that we can learn to get to know ourselves and recognize our interests. He also said that joining many activities was a free course where you can take without being afraid of making mistakes. It is like a real-life simulation, he said.
Marsel is very grateful that he could study in the English Letters Department. The lecturers and facilities are amazing. He is grateful that in the department, Students are free to explore their interests without any strict constraints. English Letters is very supportive for the students. The lecturers in the English Letters Department are very easy-going and casual.
At the end of the interview, Marsel sent some messages to the English Letters Department USD students: use your time wisely, try something new and explore to know yourself and your interests, socialize with others, be process-oriented, not a result-oriented. We need to cherish every process so that we can evaluate later. (LBTD)
