Sastra Jumatan: Meeting Prof. Iwan, an English Letters USD Alumnus from year 1998

Sastra Jumatan - February 2025

On February 27, 2025, at 19.00, Sastra Jumatan, a monthly virtual meeting held by alumni of English Letters USD received an inspiring and heartwarming sharing from Prof. Dr. Dedi Irwansyah, M.Hum, an alumnus from batch 1998. Currently, Prof. Irwan is teaching as a lecturer at IAIN Metro Lampung. In the meeting, he shared his life journey and experiences from high school until his time in English Letters USD.

Prof. Iwan asserted that the English Letters Department is a supportive learning environment. He said that he still remembers some titles of the books, which he read during his study at the department. He thinks the lessons from the English Letters USD have sharpened his critical thinking and literacy skills. Those skills will always be relevant at any time and in any work field. The discussion continued with some nostalgic sharing moments, remembering the lecturers, the courses, and some memorable spots on the campus.

Shifting the discussion from nostalgia, the session proceeded to a deep talk about today’s academic challenges. Several times, Prof. Iwan mentioned the importance of finding a niche or novelty in academic life. He suggested that students are exposed to and benefit from various fast tools to find instant answers in this era. However, like the saying ‘easy come, easy go’, students need some effort to really digest and understand the knowledge. One of the participants, Joshua, underscored that the challenge in this era is to gain an in-depth understanding. Fast and instant answers might lead to superficial and shallow understanding.
