Two Student Clubs from English Letters Department Showcased Their Talents
This weekend, ELMO and AVIS Storytellers, two student organizations in English Letters department Universitas Sanata Dharma showcased their skills in two different occasions, displaying their talents and creativity. This event also provide a space for students to demonstrate the department’s supports to its students. In English Letters department, students can develop their academic competence and sharpen their intuition and sense in giving meaning to their life. They are also encouraged to always reflect and express their reflection critically outside the classroom walls.
First, on Saturday, May 18, 2024, ELMO (English Letters Music Organization) performed in an education expo at Pakuwon Mall. They performed to introduce Universitas Sanata Dharma to the mall’s visitors, encouraging them to join USD big family. There are two ELMO members, Fey and Niel, playing music and singing before all the visitors. This event provides a place for students to enhance their confidence. They sang 3 popular songs, titled The Way You Look at Me, Cukup tau, and Drunk Text. Many English Letters students also came to the mall to give their friends supports. The English Letters Association members also came and sang along at the performance.

Second, on Sunday 19, 2024, AVIS Storytellers screened their first animation work titled “Frostfire Requiem”. The screening took place at S.202 Sastra Building campus 1, Universitas Sanata Dharma at 13.30. The script, animation, voice, and all production elements were produced by AVIS members. The work showed the club’s transformation from puppet shows into digital animation. Daffa, the current chief of the club, mentioned his view about AVIS, that in the past Avis was mostly puppeteering, and now it expanded the field into new media. Daffa sees great potential with this transformation since AVIS could tell stories more freely. The story is about a boy’s acts to take revenge on his parents’ death by the villain. Dayang, one of the script writers, explained, “the story is about not letting the grief repeat itself. Because Chester lost his family and almost repeated the cycle to girl, the child of the mage that murder his parents.” In the screening time, all AVIS members came, they wore black to suit with the animation theme. Around 20 participants came in the screening.

The participants appreciated the show positively. They asked some questions related to the challenges that the team faced during the preparation, the inspiration in writing the story, and their favourite parts. Those questions were addressed well. The team shared that they faced communication problems along the project, where there were deadlines and other agendas. However, finally they could overcome the problems and now screen the work. The team got the inspiration from many sources. At first, they wanted to have detective stories. Then, they also wanted to add magical elements. Even, they got suggestions also from friends from different department. Ajeng, one of AVIS member, mentioned that her favorite part is at the end of the story when the house was burnt down. One of the participants expressed their favourite part, which is the animation and the sound effects which successfully support the dramatic story. (SAM)
