A Message from English Letters Alumna on May Day

Nur Hasanah with her friends in English Letters Department

Today, May the First is a day to remember and honor the dedication of workers and labor all over the globe. The movement is to fight for labors’ social and economic rights. English Letters department also contributes to providing its alumni with education and experiences to face challenges in their jobs and fields. This article will present some testimonies from Nur Hasanah. She shares her experience during her study time in the English Letters Department, her passion for their work field, and her hopes for the future.

Nur Hasanah is from batch 2012. Her experience in helping Indonesian migrant workers is remarkable. This passion and commitment started when she was also a migrant worker herself. That experience drove her to upscale migrant workers’ skills and abilities before they departed from and returned to Indonesia. Since 2010, before her study time in the English Letters department, Nur has volunteered at many events and occasions for Indonesian migrant workers.

Nur participated in the Taman Cipta Kerja Learning Center (TCK LC) in Hong Kong. There she gained experience in assisting migrant workers. And today, she takes parts in Taman Cipta Kerja Nusantara (TCKN) Yogyakarta as a Community Service division staff. She handles social events including the ones for Indonesian migrants workers. It provides a platform for migrant workers to develop essential skills and reintegrate into their communities after they return to Indonesia. Nur highlighted the importance of English language proficiency in accessing formal employment. She emphasizes the role of translation in solving linguistic barriers and gaps when describing her own experience as a translator in the "Dokter Lintas Batas" program.

Nur considers the moment with the English Letters department to be very sweet and memorable. She mentioned that it has a very supportive environment nurtured by the lecturers, staff, and her peers. She found the truest meaning of “memanusiakan manusia” in the department. This is a real expression of upholding human dignity as one of the university's spirits and values. For current English Letters students, Bu Nur advises them to enjoy the time and moments in the department and make the best of it.

Nur and her child

Nur felt and learned the values of empathy, critical thinking, and service during her study in the English Letters department. She can relate those values with her contributions to society in her works. It reaffirms the English Letters department’s commitment to providing excellent education for future generations of leaders. (SAM)
