Dedication and Compassion: The Story of "Mbak Ninik" at Universitas Sanata Dharma
In the Faculty of Letters secretariat, there is a familiar face with a steadfast presence for over 33 years: Maria Ninik Sumarni, called "Mbak Ninik" by students and colleagues. Her commitment to the university as a secretariat staff member has been unquestionable. Mbak Ninik's journey with Universitas Sanata Dharma dates back to a time before it was even officially recognized as a university. She began her service on December 7, 1992, when the institution was still an institute of teacher training. Mbak Ninik has witnessed the evolution of the institution over the years.
Every morning, rain or shine, Mbak Ninik arrives at the campus gates at dawn, setting foot on campus as early as 6:30 a.m. Her dedication to her work is evident in her commitment to starting the day early, a habit she upholds with solid determination. Departing from Ceper, the eastern part of Klaten, approximately 30 km from campus, Mbak Ninik's daily commute is no small feat, yet she tackles it with resilience and grace.
Over the years, Mbak Ninik has witnessed significant changes within the English Letters department, particularly with the advancement of the digital era. With the technological advancements, she acknowledges that the digital age has helped her in many administrative processes and works, making documents and teaching materials more accessible to students and lecturers. Gone are the days of cut-and-paste paperwork; now, everything is uploadable and downloadable with just a few clicks.
Despite the benefits of digitalization, Mbak Ninik acknowledges the challenges of adapting to new systems and technologies. Setting up schedules and coordinating with students can sometimes be daunting, especially when faced with tight deadlines and delayed responses. However, Mbak Ninik's compassion and dedication shine through as she navigates these challenges with patience and understanding, ensuring that students' needs are met to the best of her abilities.
For Mbak Ninik, the Faculty of Letters, especially the English Letters department, is more than just a workplace—it's a second home filled with beloved students she treats like her own children. While some may perceive her occasional firmness as sternness, students praise her for the exceptional service she provides. Her tireless efforts and selfless dedication have not gone unnoticed, earning her the admiration and respect of all who have worked with her.
Looking to the future, Mbak Ninik holds hope for the continued success and growth of the English Letters department. She dreams of a day when more students will study in the department, eager to pursue their academic passions, and hopes to see lecturers further their educational journeys through higher education. With Mbak Ninik's dedication and compassionate spirit, the future of the English Letters department at Universitas Sanata Dharma shines brighter than ever before. (SAM)
