In this era of globalization, the ability to communicate in English has become a very important need, especially in the academic field. Debate is one of the effective learning methods for developing communication skills, critical thinking, and increasing self-confidence. English Debate Competitions were an effective tool for developing student’s communication skills in English. English Debate Society (EDS) of Universitas Sanata Dharma in collaboration with SMA Harapan Bangsa Balikpapan held an online English debate training for high school students.
This English debate training involved two English debate teams from SMA Harapan Bangsa Balikpapan consisting of six students and two teachers. These two debate teams will be projected to participate in the high school-level debate competition, NSDC. The English debate training was held online via Zoom meeting on April 1 & 5, 2024. The trainer was from the English Debate Society (EDS). They were Seanpaul Lapudooh and Yosua Antonio Subekti.

The training topics were a short overview of the Australian Debate format, understanding the speaker roles, a short overview of motion types, and an overview of general debating strategy for both the government and opposition bench. The training started with an explanation from the trainer about the topics then followed by practicing the debate with the motion chosen by the trainer. At the end of the training, the trainer gave feedback to each speaker. The goal of the training was to enlarge the networking and develop the debating skills of the participants. For the EDS, this training was a good start to show their contribution in the form of a society services program to improve high school students’ debating skills and also gave them experience as debate trainers.
