SMM Hosts Movie Watching and Discussion Event: Exploring "Terimalah Laguku" (Djadoeg Djajakusuma, 1952)
On Monday, April 8, 2024, SMM members and film enthusiasts gathered at S.405 room for a movie watching and discussion event hosted by Strings Movie Maniacs (SMM), an UKPS in Sastra Inggris which is interested in film watching activities. From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., attendees watched and discussed "Terimalah Laguku" a film by Djadoeg Djajakusuma in 1952.

The event aimed to achieve two primary objectives: Firstly, to gather film enthusiasts and provide them with an opportunity to watch and enjoy the film together, building a network and friendships in appreciating the art of cinema. Secondly, to encourage participants to critically analyze the film from various perspectives, exploring its themes, cinematography, and historical significance.
The discussion film screening and discussion segment started with SMM and Sasing department extending a warm welcome to Ms. Umi Lestari, a film critic and researcher, to lead the discussion. Ms. Lestari's expertise and insights added depth to the conversation, as she navigated through the details of the film. Ms. Lestari facilitated a stimulating discussion that encouraged participants to share their perspectives and interpretations of "Terimalah Laguku".


The event attracted approximately 20 participants from various affiliations and institutions, showing the widespread interest and appreciation for Indonesian cinema and its discussion. As the event drew to a close, participants got insights from "Terimalah Laguku" and a deeper understanding of its contexts. Overall, the movie watching and discussion event proved to be a success, showcasing the power of cinema to inspire reflection, dialogue, and connection.

The film was directed by Djadoeg Djajakusuma (1918 - 1987), a film director from Temanggung, Central Java. During the Japanese occupation, Djadoeg worked at the Cultural Center (Keimin Bunka Shidoso) as a stage script translator. As a revolutionary fighter in the cultural realm, Djadoeg worked as a journalist for Antara and Patriot, as well as being a teacher at Stichting Entertainment Mataram. Together with the Indonesian Film Company (Perfini), Djadoeg directed several films such as Embun (1951), Accept My Song (1952), Harimau Tjampa (1953), Tjambuk Api (1958), and Birth of Gatotkatja (1960). Apart from being a director and scriptwriter, Djadoeg was also an actor in the film Perempuan Dalam Pasungan (1980).
Seanpaul Lapudoh (214214106) mentioned that "today's film discussion was an exhilirating session displaying not only the extensive knowledge of SMM's filmography, but also presents itself as a statement event, showcasing their love and appreciation for Indonesian film history. Moving forward, events like this is a pivotal step in reviving interest in the Indonesian film industry, especially in an era of franchise films dominated by Hollywood blockbusters. May in the future, SMM continue their path in partnering with various communities and individuals of the film world, and steadily promote the vast history of Indonesian cinema". Louisa Sefina (214214043) also mentioned that "for me, it was a simple yet very insightful event. The movie is also quite interesting, since it was the first time I watch a black and white film"
