Faculty of Letters USD Announces Poetry Writing Competition: Leadership, Social Justice & Ecological Justice
The Faculty of Letters at Universitas Sanata Dharma (USD) announces a Poetry Writing Competition open to all students, lecturers, and staff members of the faculty. This event invites participants to submit their poems from May 1 to 20, 2024, providing a place for artistic expression and reflection on the theme. This year's competition theme is "Kepemimpinan, Keadilan Sosial, dan Keadilan Ekologis" (Leadership, Social Justice, and Ecological Justice). Participants are invited to think about those important topics and explore them through the art of poetry, while adhering to the guidelines. This competition celebrates the 31st Faculty of Letters’ Dies Natalis.
English Letters students, as an integral part of the Faculty of Letters family, are particularly encouraged to participate in this e competition. The event aligns with their academic experiences, offering a practical exercise to apply their knowledge and skills in poetry writing and literary analysis. For instance, English Letters students have the advantage of a dedicated creative writing class in their sixth semester, where they practice writing poems and enhancing their poetic skills. Additionally, in Stylistics classes, students examine the language in literary works to reveal the purpose and effects of language style, particularly in poems. This competition serves as a perfect opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in these classes.
For those interested in submitting their works, poems should be written in Arial 11, with 1.5 spacing, and should not exceed two pages in length. Participants can submit their poems via the provided link: bit.ly/FormLombaPuisiFS. The winners of the competition will be announced on May 27, 2024 and performed in the awarding night or in the Malam Ekspresi Sastra Spotlight. In addition to the invaluable experience and recognition, participants have the chance to win attractive cash prizes: the first prize winner will receive Rp750,000, the second prize winner will be awarded Rp500,000, and the third prize winner will take home Rp350,000. Furthermore, the winning poems will be published on the departments' social media platforms, showcasing the creativity of the Faculty of Letters community.
The competition aligns with the humanistic values that the Faculty of Letters USD holds, serving as a place for students and faculty members to express their ideas and thoughts about their surroundings, fostering a culture of critical thinking and social awareness. Mr. Yoseph Yapi Taum, the Dean of Faculty of Letters mentioned, "The theme 'Leadership, Social Justice, and Ecological Justice' chosen for the 31st Anniversary of the Faculty of Literature at Sanata Dharma University is highly relevant and crucial in the current context. Responsible and inclusive leadership is necessary to ensure the establishment of social justice for all members of society, including ecological justice for our environment. Leadership focused on social justice issues must consider the rights of all individuals and groups, including the rights of future generations to live in a healthy and sustainable environment. Ecological justice refers to fair treatment of all living beings and the natural environment, recognizing that humans cannot live separately from nature and must maintain ecosystem balance. In the context of the poetry writing competition theme, participants are expected to portray the importance of social and ecological justice through their works. Poetry has the power to inspire change and convey important messages about sustainability and justice. With this theme, it is hoped that the poems produced can serve as a call to action for leaders and communities to advocate for social and ecological justice in their daily lives." Mr. Hirmawan Wijanarka, the Vice Dean of Faculty of Letters, added, "In the midst of today's rapid, uncertain, and complex flow of information and communication technology, this poetry writing competition is a humble effort to always keep the spirit of literature aflame in the heart of Faculty of Letters, SDU"
Don't miss this chance to be part of this competition. Submit your poems and be part of a community and family that values creativity, critical thinking, and social consciousness. Stay tuned for updates as the competition progresses, and let your voice be heard through the power of poetry!
