EDS on NUDC 2017: Stepping Up the Game
The appointment of NUDC delegates was done through two internal competitions, specifically department level and Sanata Dharma university level. From various faculties competing, two debaters and an N1 adjudicator from English Letters department were chosen. The final composition (in order) consisted of Anoxia Festyarini Arumsari (2014), Gracia Prasetyanti Utami (2015), and Intan Realista Zanta Avhisa (2014). The team then had to fight in numerous national competitions consecutively as a part of their intensive training.
Until finally, NUDC Kopertis V took place in Griya Persada Kaliurang (May 22th - 24th). Grace and Festy managed to be the 2nd breaking team, bearing very slight score difference with the 1st breaking team UGM. They also snatched (in order) the 3rd and 4th best speaker positions. Meanwhile, Rea became the 2nd breaking N1 adjudicator after managing a stable position as a panel and later promoted as a chair. And so, USD advanced to NUDC Semarang along with UGM, UNY, UMY, UII, UAD, ATMA, and AMIKOM as Kopertis V representatives. |
From September 3rd to 8th, USD team fought through 7 rounds in PGRI University, gathering a total of 16 victory points. They need to face 2 additional preliminary rounds (a change in this year’s NUDC adapted from WUDC) before finally passing to the quarter-final. USD defended their stance against UI, UGM, and UNESA under the motion ‘THBT the US should focus on trying to contain anuclear armed North Korea rather than attempting to force North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons’. Their set up as Opening Government was unfortunately granted 3rd rank, stopping their journey in quarter-final round.
USD was among 3 Kopertis V representatives in the octofinal, and among 2 in the quarter. This year’s achievement mirrored last year’s, where team USD ranked 3rd in quarter-final. “This is a great opportunity to develop ourselves, as a debater and as a person,” said Grace giving her final say, “NUDC is the best stepping stone for debaters to get incomparable experience”. Rea concluded, “NUDC 2017 may have ended, but another journey and countless opportunities lie ahead of us.” (GPU)
