National Seminar on Translation 2017: Translation Theories and Practices Revisited
The seminar, moderated by Imas Ristyastuti, S.S., began with a plenary session presenting Rahmani Astuti, a translation practitioner and Harris Hermansyah Setiajid, a translation academician. Rahmania Astusi blazed up the nuance with her stories about her journey becoming a professional translator who have translated more than 300 books until now. She delivered her sharing with a funny and relaxed way so the audiences were feeling joyful and motivated to be translators. The session was continued to a serious discussion as Mr. Harris Hermansyah Setiajid explained about the journey of translation studies from ancient to current era. “God created special persons to become the bridge of diversities; they were translators” he quoted Paulo Coelho, Like a Flowing River.

After the plenary session, the seminar continued with a coffee break before we headed to the next three parallel sessions. The participants were divided into three parallel classes before lunch, two classes in the afternoon and two other classes before we ended the event with a closing remarkand a summary from the Committee Chair, Stefani Veronika.
Personally as one of the presenters, I was quite amazed with the seminar because although it was the first national seminar held by ELAC in collaboration with JLTC, it was all well arranged and pleasantly welcomed by both practitioners as well as translation academicians. It is expected that this good work will continue and be held annually as an arena for academicians, practitioners, linguists, and students alike, to discuss and share their expertise and experience on translation matters, and arouse students’ interest to do translation researches.
