Seminar on Corpus Linguistics 2017: Time to Break Your Limit

As it was stated in the theme above, this seminar mainly discussed about Corpus Linguistics which until now is still uncommon for many researchers in Indonesia. The last session in this seminar was closed by parallel session in which 26 selected researchers presented their papers.

In the last session, selected presenters and all participants were divided into five different rooms based on the major that they chose. Linguistics, language teaching, translation, and literature were the majors discussed by 26 selected researchers in this session.

Of course, it is priceless and unforgettable for me to join this event. I did not only gain new insight about corpus linguistics that I had never heard before but also got a chance to present my research in this forum. At first, I was pessimistic to join this event as it was difficult for me to build my own confidence. However, thanks to my super lecturer as well as my thesis advisor, Mr. Harris who always encouraged me that finally I sent my abstract and it was selected by the committee of this seminar to be presented.

“It’s the time to break your limit,” I thought in mind. I worked hard to complete my papers and PowerPoint before the deadline given by the committee because it was my first experience joining in this kind of event. I wanted all things were well-prepared so that it would not cause a problem later. It is such an honor for me to present my research entitled “The Translation of Architectural Terms of Islamic Religious Buildings with a Special Reference to Rumah Bambu: Arsitektur Khas Jawa Barat” in front of other super researchers. I call them “super” because most of them are students from postgraduate program and even doctoral program who come from reputable universities, such as Universitas Gajah Mada, Universitas Airlangga, and even Universitas Indonesia.

Knowing that other researchers are more experienced than me, an undergraduate student who is still in the process of finishing her undergraduate program, did not make me lose my confidence. It encouraged me to do my best. I was so thankful that English Letters gave me opportunity to join this event.

You have to keep this in mind that joining this kind of event is not as hard as you may imagine, like what I thought before. One last thing I want to emphasize here is “never say you can’t before you try” because you will never know how to break your limit until you do something out of your comfort zone.
