Sunan Kalijaga Debate Competition - Another Competition, Another Achievement

The debate team consisted of three English Letters students: Belandina Moore (2014) and Zenhing Angeline (2016) as the debaters and Diana (2016) as the adjudicator. In SKEPTIC, Belandina Moore and Zenhing Angeline had to go through six rounds facing opponents from many universities. Finally, in breaking announcement, team debate Sanata Dharma became the 5th breaking teams with 9 victory points. In addition, Belandina Moore was succesfully granted as the co-6th best speakers as well.

In elimination rounds, Moore and Zenhing competed with quite strong teams in octo-final. They proceeded to quarter-final facing Semarang State University, STIPRAM and Yogyakarta State University. The motion is THBT religious official (e.g. priest, rabbis, imams) should not make statements in support of specific political candidates, policies, and parties. They were  successful in making new perspectives as closing government team; they had fought their best.

After successfully managed to the quaterfinal-round, Sanata Dharma debate team continued to battle in facing the oppenents with the motion TH regrets the rise of portrayal that people battling cancer are “heroes”.  They were not successful in fulfilling the role as opening government. Unfortunately, they had to stop their journey in semi final for they got the 3rd rank in semi final.

Eventhough their journey stopped at semi-final, they had faced various and diverse teams from all over Indonesia. This was one of the achivement that EDS Sadhar got in semi-national debating competition. The achievement was a stepping stone for EDS Sadhar to enhance and develop their career in national competition—also going further in the either national or international debating field.

“In the competition we competed on several themes, such as law, economy, social affairs, international relations, and recent issues such as religion,”said Zenhing on Saturday (22/4) at Student Hall, USD.

Moore said she was proud that their teams had performed optimally. She hoped in the future the EDS SADHAR team would be able to make more advancement and achievements in various national and international competitions. Diana Citra, as one of the newbies of EDS SADHAR was also grateful to be able to adjudicate disparate speakers with their own distinctive English for the very first time.


Even though we stopped at semifinal, we really enjoy the competition. Now we keep on practising and preparing ourselves to give our best in the next competition,” Moore concluded (Blandina Moore)
