Sastra Gives Back: Teach a Lesson to Learn a Lesson

This year, Sastra Gives Back was in collaboration with SD Negeri Tlogowareng in Karangmojo, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta to give after-school learning sessions to their students. The first project was held in four meetings during weekends on 29-30 April 2017 and 6-7 May 2017. It was a crash program designed to assist the 6th graders to prepare for the National Examination on 15-18 May 2017.

There were seven students who volunteered with patience and passion to teach the 6th graders.  They were Intan Realista Zanta Avisha, Elsa Auliya Rizky, Theresia Aprilliani Putri Marpaung, Jovan Mario Hans Sianturi, and Didimus Estanto Turuk, Birgita Feva Nurregina and Claudia Chyntia Ayu Anggraeni . This program was also under supervision and guidance of  Simon Arsa Manggala, S.S., M.Hum., and Harris Hermansyah S., M.Hum as the person in charge of the program.

In order to use the session effectively, the SGB team was divided into seven groups and each one gave personal teaching method to two or three students. The team chose to use that approach because they could know the students’ studying character and teach them step by step. They also liked to keep the atmosphere unstrained with some jokes to make them more relaxed. In the last meeting, they got a little quiz for them to know which kind of question the students still found it difficult and were able to emphasize it more.

The SGB team did not only give elaboration about the materials, but  also motivated the kids to continue their study through easy and fun conversation during the learning session and through a video project of interviews with some inspirational people. This was done to build up the students’ confidence of their intelligence to face the National Exam and to open their mind that education is an important thing and that’s why they have to pursue the education till the highest level.

Though the seven volunteers were supposed to be the teachers, they admitted that the students also teach them a lot of things about life. They had opened their eyes that not all children had the same privilege to access good education with complete infrastructure like them. Theresia, one of the volunteers said that the students had given them inspiration to keep hold on to hope and keep the spirit up.

All members of the team felt blessed and  thanked  English Letters Department, SD Negeri Tlogowareng, Pak Edy Prapto for providing accommodation during the program, and the alumni of English Letters Department for giving donation to this  program so that the students of Tlogowareng could experience such a memorable event. They hope the next project that will be held in the next fall semester will be great too. (Claudia CAA
