EDS Breaking the Boundaries: Not Bad for a First Timer!
English Debating Society of Sanata Dharma proves their debating skill encompasses language barier. Having a background of debating in English does not mean they can not get an achievement in debating using Bahasa Indonesia. This marks the English debaters’ first achievement in a non-English debating competition. Anoxia Festyarini Arumsari (2014), Intan Realista Zanta Avhisa (2014), and Gracia Prasetyanti Utami (2015) succeeded to be the First Runner-Up of National Debate Competition using Bahasa Indonesia held in Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) on May 24th – 26th 2016.
The National Debate Competition is an annual event conducted by Communication Studies Program of UII as one part of the events in Kampung Komunikasi. This competition was participated by 16 teams from different regions of Indonesia such as East Java, West Java, Central Java, D.I. Yogyakarta, Sumatra, and Gorontalo. The competition didn’t have any preliminary rounds, meaning that it was either getting consecutive wins or being eliminated by losing a single round. In the first round on Tuesday, May 24th, Sadhar faced Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Sadhar’s team gained victory and could proceed to the quarterfinal round the following day.
On Wednesday, May 25th, Sadhar’s team must pass through quarterfinal and semifinal in order to be the grandfinalists. In quarterfinal, they beated the host team from UII. The team from Universitas Airlangga became Sadhar’s opponent in the semifinal. It was a pretty though round for Sadhar since their opponent had experienced as Bahasa Indonesia debaters. Nevertheless, Sadhar’s team won the semifinal round. On May 26th,the grand battle rose between Sadhar and Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) under the motion “Parlemen ini akan Membatasi Kepemilikan Media oleh Para Politisi” In the end, the adjudicators found UNNES’s proposal more convincing and therefore Sadhar had to stay on the first runner-up position.
“It is surprisingly hard for us to use standardized Bahasa Indonesia. We still use some English words here and there to express certain terms—luckily, the adjudicators tolerate us. Seeing the other teams use formal Indonesian fluently and with exceptional manner, it fills us with determination,” said Grace. The adjudicators did not find Sadhar’s team matter or method problematic, but they suggested to, although it was not forbidden, lessen the use of English in their speech.
“Even though we can not get the first position, we really enjoy the competition. We meet many students from different regions and they are all friendly. Over all, the comittee do a great job in conducting the event. The most important thing, we learn a lot how to use proper and standardized Bahasa Indonesia in a speech from this competition,” said Rea.
Festy, Rea, and Grace realized that the preparation for this competition was not maximum due to the busy schedule of the other competitions and limited practices in debating using Bahasa Indonesia. They hope that by preparing better and practicing more, Sadhar could be the winner of next year’s competition. (Rea, Grace)
