"Do Not Stop Us Now!" EDS Won Again in SEA UMY 2016
On Sunday 15th of May, English Debating Society (EDS) of Sanata Dharma University won again at the regional level. USD’s debating teams dominated the Student English Activity (SEA) UMY 2016 in Yogyakarta. SEA UMY 2016 was an English competition held annually by Muhammadiyah University in which several universities in Yogyakarta were participating.
English Letters Department sent two teams to compete in Student English Activity (SEA) UMY 2016 in Yogyakarta. In SEA UMY, SADHAR A and SADHAR B had to pass through five (5) rounds facing opponents from other universities in a day. The first team, SADHAR A, consisted of Anoxia Festy (2014), Gracia Prasetyanti Utami (2015), and Intan Realista (2014), proceeded to be the first breaking team into top four (4) teams as the result collecting full victory points out of 3 rounds, and had to go against Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) first in order to become the grand-finalist. Moreover, SADHAR B, which consisted of Ratih Cahyani (2015), Salwa Novira (2014) and Belandina Moore (2014) managed to be the third team to break into the top 4 teams as the result collecting 2 victory points out of three rounds, team SADHAR B had to go further combating Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) first in order to become the grand-finalist of the competition along with SADHAR A. Thankfully, SADHAR A and SADHAR B could successfully tackle down the team from UNY and UII, making them become the grand-finalist of SEA UMY 2016 and forcing the civil war between SADHAR A and SADHAR B to happen.
In a great final round of debate with the motion: ”Brexit is the way to go”, eventually the adjudicators decided to give the winning to SADHAR A and SADHAR B as the runner up. ”We are veryhappy and proud to have won the title of champion in the SEA UMY 2016.”, stated one of Sanata Dharma’s debaters. Furthermore, Anoxia Festy, has been awarded as the best speaker for the whole competition of SEA UMY 2016. The achievements made by SADHAR A and SADHAR B were the results of hard practices that they had for almost two weeks. The two teams hoped that from these regional achievements would lead and motivate EDS SADHAR to be ready in national and international level.
“Gratefully, all our hard work paid off,”said Belandina Moore on Tuesday (16/5) at the Faculty of Letters USD. “Hopefully, from these achievements and competition we could exercise our critical thinking, public speaking skill and be more aware of social issues. Definitely, we can make good achievements in the next competition. Stay tuned because EDS Sanata Dharma never stops" she concluded. (moore)
