Student Interfaith Peace Camp 2015

There were 28 participants from various universities. Some of them were students of Gadjah Mada University, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University, Duta Wacana Christian University, and some of them also came from Pattimura University and Hassanudin University. This interfaith peace camp consisted of Muslims, Christians, and a Buddhist.

On the first day of the camp, all the participants gathered at Gedung Pascasarjana Gadjah Mada  University before leaving for Kaliurang. After 40 minutes of driving, the participants were given the key of their room. In the opening session, the participants introduced each other, and the dialogue and discussion followed.

The first day

The participants were introduced with the 12 Basic Values of Peace, which were divided into 9 sessions. On the first day, there were three sessions, Understand and Accept Who We Are, Overcome Prejudice, Diversity of Ethnicity, Gender, and Economic Status.  Every session was commenced with games which brought more fun to the event. The games were formed as creative as possible  to infuse the participants with the understanding of each value. There was also night sharing where participants were asked to tell about their family. The participants freely told their family background confidently, although some of them had some serious family problems.

The second day

The second day was quite different from the first day. The participants had to wake up at 4.00 a.m. to do shalat and pray together. Then, they did Scriptural Reasoning. Scriptural Reasoning was an activity that all participants sat in groups and read a verse from Al Qur’an and Bible. They  read two verses which had similar content: a communion with Allah (Exodus 3:1-8 and 20:9-23). The participants learned the literal meaning of the verses and concluded the moral value that they could take. Other sessions on the second day were Religion and Its Beauty, Interfaith Dialogue Knowing Deeper about Islam and Christian Along With Common World, Group Exclusivism, Resolving Conflict, and Without Violence. All participants learned deeper about Islam and Christianity, and discussed issues and conflicts in society related to the topics. When it came to night sharing time, the participants were asked to tell their worst and happiest moment in their life. Some of them had funny experience and some of them had a very touching story.

The third day

The last day was a repetition of the second day, but this time the participants should wear white shirt with a writing read “Salam Peace Shalom”.  In Scriptural Reasoning, the participants read two verses about women and equality (John 8:2-11 and Ali Imran 43-35). We finally were in the ninth session, Apologize and Forgive. Nevertheless, there was another part in the last day which was interesting. At the end of the camp, there was Heart to Heart Dialogue and Reconciliation session. Some participants talked about their prejudice on Islam and Christianity. All the prejudice were then clarified.

The camp got positive response from the participants. Most participants were amazed with this program and planned to join another one with YIPC. (Devi)
