The English Studies Club (KBI) at Sanata Dharma University (USD) teamed up with ELT Gallery to host the English Vocabulary Mastery Competition on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on the 3rd floor of the Postgraduate Building at USD's Mrican Campus. The competition was open to undergraduate students, and a total of 40 participants from various universities joined in.

The event wasn't just about testing vocabulary skills; it was also a chance for students from different schools with the same interests to connect and network. It was also held to celebrate ELT Gallery's 20th anniversary, as it was founded back in 2006.

The event kicked off with an opening by the MC, followed by a speech from ELT Gallery's chairman, Dr. Benedictus Bherman Dwijatmoko,M.A. who expressed his appreciation for the participants' enthusiasm. Even though this was the very first time the competition was held, the turnout was pretty impressive.

"This is the first, and I'm happy that we have 40 participants," he said during his speech.

He also noted that the excitement came not just from USD students, but also from other universities. UNY sent the most participants, followed by Sanata Dharma University, Universitas Islam Mulia, UAD, Yogyakarta Technology University (UTY), STBA LIA, Mercu Buana University, and several others.

He also mentioned that the platform used in the competition was originally built as a writing and vocabulary learning tool before it grew into a broader English learning platform.

Next, the Head of the English Studies Program, Agustinus Hardi Prasetyo,S.Pd., Ph.D. gave a speech saying the competition was very relevant to how English grammar and vocabulary are taught and assessed.

"This vocabulary mastery competition is quite timely because we just discussed assessing grammar and vocabulary, and teaching grammar and vocabulary," he said.

During the competition, participants had 50 minutes to answer various types of questions. Final scores were announced right after time was up.

The winners split a total appreciation pool of Rp1,500,000. First place took home Rp750,000, second place received Rp500,000, and third place got Rp250,000.

In the end, first place went to Remigius Octaviano Raysananda from Sanata Dharma University with a total score of 12,200. Second place went to Ivana Kusumawardhani from Yogyakarta State University, and third place went to Beatrice Andini from Sanata Dharma University.

Given how enthusiastic everyone was, it's hoped that similar competitions will continue to be held as a way to develop students' English skills and strengthen connections between universities, especially in the field of English education.
