During the session, Prof. Utsumi explored three key areas of research:
Sociolinguistic Research: Analyzing language use among people in Java and other regions of Indonesia.
Geolinguistic Research: Examining specific word forms to create detailed linguistic atlases.
Onomatopoeia in Japanese: Providing a unique look at sound-symbolism within the Japanese language.
She also discussed the progress of her "Research Project 2026," which involves collecting sociolinguistic data from across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Malang, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. This project aims to document regional vocabularies and compare the vitality of various indigenous languages.
The event drew an enthusiastic and diverse audience from several institutions. Attendees included lecturers and students from Universitas Sanata Dharma (USD), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and Universitas Respati Yogyakarta. The active Q&A session reflected a deep community interest in linguistic documentation and international academic collaboration. This initiative continues to strengthen the ties between international researchers and the KBI academic community, broadening perspectives for students and faculty alike.
