Saengtham-Sanata Dharma English Summer Course 2024: Enhancing Language Skills
19/06/2024 WIB
Nakhon Pathom, Thailand – The Saengtham-Sanata Dharma English Summer Course 2024, a collaborative initiative between Sanata Dharma University (SDU) and Saengtham College, concluded on May 18th. This program was designed to help first-year philosophy and Catechetical students improve their English language skills.
Two volunteers from SDU's English Language Study Program taught the course, which ran from April 29th to May 18th, Monday to Saturday, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The course focused on conversational English for daily life and activities specific to higher education.
Before starting the course, the volunteers conducted a pre-test to assess the students' initial English proficiency levels. The results indicated a need for significant improvement in speaking and comprehension skills. Moreover, upon observation, the primary obstacle seems to be a combination of fear to experiment on the English language and thoughts in general, but at the same time an absence of the pressure to speak. These problems in new students were confirmed by the Priests and teachers of Saengtham College.
Initially, students were hesitant to speak English due to a lack of confidence. The course addressed this by increasing discussion and conversational sessions. This approach helped students become more comfortable with using English in real-life scenarios.
The students came from various provinces in Thailand, including Tak, Ratchaburi, and Ubon Ratchathani, as well as from Vietnam and Myanmar. This cultural and dialectal diversity enriched the learning environment but also contributed to their initial timidity.
Despite starting at a basic proficiency level, students showed significant improvement by the end of the course. Their progress was evident in higher post-test scores and increased confidence in speaking English.
The course organizers noted that focusing more on vocabulary and comprehension could further enhance speaking skills in future iterations. They also suggested extending the course duration to cover more material.
The success of this summer course highlights the potential benefits of continued educational collaboration between SDU and Saengtham College.
