Play Performance 2025 by PBI USD Showcases Students’ Creativity, Performance Skills, and Collaboration

The English Language Education Study Program (PBI) of Sanata Dharma University carries the mission of providing an education that integrates academic excellence with humanistic values. PBI prepares future educators, edupreneurs, researchers, and literary practitioners who are mature in character, critical and open-minded, competent, creative, reliable, and professional.

Graduates of PBI are expected to contribute meaningfully to the advancement and intellectual development of the nation through impactful work in both educational and non-educational fields.
As one of the most prominent study programs at Sanata Dharma University, PBI has earned an A (Excellent) accreditation, reaffirming its quality, credibility, and strong national reputation.

About Cockroach Opera
Play Performance 2025 features Opera Kecoa (The Cockroach Opera), a significant theatrical work by N. Riantiarno, first staged in 1985 by Teater Koma a theatre group he founded and directed. The play, often referred to as OK, gained public attention and controversy for its bold and unapologetic social and political criticism of the era. After undergoing several revisions, the script was later republished by the Lontar Foundation.
As students of the English Language Education Study Program, we carry the same spirit and intention as the playwright. Rather than taking to the streets, we choose to communicate these critiques and reflections through an English-language theatrical work, allowing the literature and its meanings to reach a broader audience.
The play presents a stark depiction of life among the urban poor: prostitution, thuggery, injustice, and corruption realities that expose the deep social disparities between the people and those in power during the New Order era. Opera Kecoa also highlights the divide between marginalized communities struggling to survive and the privileged elite who live in comfort and often exploit their positions.
This critique underscores how socio-economic inequality leads to discrimination, injustice, and the erosion of human dignity. Even today, the issues raised in the play remain relevant, inviting audiences to reflect on moral, cultural, and humanitarian values in contemporary society.
Opera Kecoa stands apart from other theatrical works due to its layered social messages and the creative demands it places on performers. Bringing its characters to life requires time, depth of thought, and artistic interpretation. For this reason, staging Opera Kecoa is not merely an act of entertainment but also an invitation to reflect on the social realities that continue to surround us.

Event Support
In the event implementation, CV. Mitra Catering H. Kasmu was the official food supplier for all participants and invited guests. The extent of the cooperation included:
