Experiencing XLC, Thailand

On 17 to 30 March 2018, Teresia Dian and Aloisious Wisnu, students of the English Language Education Master's Programme of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, had an opportunity to do their teaching practicum at Xavier Learning Community (XLC), Chiang Rai, Thailand. They taught English for the first-year students of XLC, coming from various tribes around Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, and Tak. XLC is a Jesuit learning institution that caters to the diverse ethnic groups in northern Thailand and neighboring countries, such as Laos and Myanmar. It is located in Mae Chan District in the Province of Chiang Rai, less than 20 minutes from the Golden Triangle.

At XLC, they experienced living and sharing in a community with the students and all staff. They should wash their dishes, clean their rooms, have a daily mass, and eat with the students and all staff together. Besides, they had a One-on-One session, which allowed them to talk or share with the students about various topics, such as campus life, scholarship, and cultural diversity. This session helped them understand their students better. These experiences had given them a new perspective of how to live in a community.

In addition, they helped two undergraduate students of English Language Education Study Programme of Sanata Dharma University, who also did their teaching practicum at XLC. Together they prepared and taught the Outreach program. This program is designed for students from primary 1 to 6, who live around XLC and want to learn English. This program is part of XLC's motto, “Growing in Community, Sharing with Society.” This was a great experience for them as it could improve their teaching skills and develop their teacher identity.
