Juthatip Mingkun and Co-Researchers Explore Cross-Cultural Teaching Experiences in Thailand

Yogyakarta, 2026 — Juthatip Mingkun (Mook), a student of the Master’s Program in English Language Education (MPBI) at Sanata Dharma University, has successfully published a research article in Englisia: Journal of Language Education and Humanities. The article, entitled “From Expectation to Reality: A Study on Self-Efficacy and Motivational Adjustment of Indonesian Pre-Service English Teachers in Cross-Cultural Teaching in Thailand,”was published on 31 May 2026.

The study explores the experiences of Indonesian pre-service English teachers engaged in cross-cultural teaching in Thailand, focusing particularly on their self-efficacy and motivational adjustment. It examines how teachers’ expectations may develop or change as they encounter the realities of teaching in a different cultural and educational context.

Through this research, Mook and the co-researchers highlight the importance of understanding pre-service teachers’ experiences as they navigate unfamiliar teaching environments. Their experiences provide valuable insights into teacher preparation, cross-cultural teaching, and the development of professional confidence and motivation among future English teachers.

For Mook, the publication process was approached with a mindset focused on giving the best to the research rather than worrying about the outcome.

“I didn't really expect anything from the publication process. I just thought that whether it's Sinta 4, 3, or 2, I'm going to give my best to the paper anyway. So, if I'm already putting in that much effort, why not aim higher, right?” Mook shared.

Rather than viewing rejection as a setback, Mook saw it as part of the learning process as a new researcher. “If I get rejected, that's totally fine because I'm new here, but if I get accepted, that's a bonus,” Mook said.

Mook also described approaching the process with confidence and a positive mindset: “It was like, ‘Okay, I'm going to be published here. I just need to revise the paper to make it fit this journal.’”

According to Mook, this mindset helped make the publication process considerably less stressful. “I think that mindset made the whole process feel much less stressful for me and for us too!” Mook added.

The publication reflects the growing engagement of MPBI students in research on English language education, particularly in areas related to teacher development, cross-cultural experiences, and international teaching contexts. It also demonstrates how a confident and growth-oriented approach can encourage students to pursue higher academic goals through research and publication.
