MPBI Community Service Program: “First, Love Your English”

On November 30, 2025, students and a lecturer from the MPBI program at Sanata Dharma University launched a book entitled “First, Love Your English.” The book launch was held at 10 a.m. at the Santa Maria Ganjuran Orphanage, Bantul. This book is the final product of a community service program in the “Material and Program Design” course.

This book was developed by Yohanes Bagas Nur Setiawan, Martinus Hergirico Riandana, Paschalis Kurniawan Sanjaya, Axel Emmanuel Herman Jr. Kolatlena, and Barli Bram. It was specifically designed to support English language learning for young learners in Santa Maria Ganjuran orphanage. The various activities which apply differentiated instructions in this book are designed to create a fun and enjoyable learning experience for young learners.

The launch event began with a speech from MPBI lecturer, Bapak Barli, in which he briefly explained the purpose of our visit to the orphanage. After that, the speech was continued by a representative of the orphanage, Bapak Haryono. He expressed his gratitude and said that with this book, it is hoped that the process of learning English for the children at the orphanage will become easier, more enjoyable, and more structured. It is hoped that the book increases their interest in learning English and their confidence in using English in their daily lives.
After that, the activity continued with a book explanation session. In this session, the students presented the content and various activities contained in the book. The explanation included an overview and brief description of some units presented in the book. In the making, this book was compiled with contextual learning units that are closely related to young learners’ daily lives. All units  are: Hi! My Name is ….; Be on time; A Day In My Life; Be Kind, Be Polite; Merry Christmas!; How Do You Feel Today?; Future Me; And Power Up Your Health!

This book also provides interesting characters in each chapter to accompany and guide the learning process. In addition, it is equipped with QR codes that make it easy for children to access additional learning materials in the form of audio and video. At the end of each unit, there is a vocabulary list that is expected to help children enrich their vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of the material they have learned.
The activity concluded with a meal and group photo with the children at the orphanage. It is hoped that this activity will foster warmer relationships between MPBI students and the children at the orphanage, while also providing a meaningful learning experience and motivating the children to continue learning English with enthusiasm.
