MPBI Community Service Program: “SPARK” Interactive English Textbook

On 31 October 2025, MPBI students from Sanata Dharma University introduced the interactive English textbook “SPARK: Speak, Practice, and Read with Knowledge” at SMP Negeri 1 Kalasan, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The book was developed as part of a community service program and was presented directly to Grade 8 students, who will use it in their English learning.

This book was developed by Edeltrudis Patrisia Soge, Galuh Wuryaningtyas, Simron Krisnuarjati Hindom, and Natalina Antonia dos Santos, under the leadership of Mr. Markus Budiraharjo, Ed.D., as the community service program leader. SPARK promotes a communicative approach that balances listening, speaking, reading, and writing, supported by simple, interactive features that help students learn more actively.

Edeltrudis Patrisia Soge served as the master of ceremonies. The program opened with a prayer delivered by a student representative, followed by welcoming remarks from the Principal of SMP N 1 Kalasan. Then, Mr. Markus Budiraharjo, Ed.D., gave an introduction highlighting the purpose of the activity and the importance of interactive materials in supporting English learning under the Kurikulum Merdeka.

The book presentation session began with Galuh Wuryaningtyas, who explained the general structure and chapters of SPARK. Sr. Natalina Antonia dos Santos continued by describing the integration of technology in the book, particularly the use of QR codes to access supporting audio and video materials. Next, Simron Krisnuarjati Hindom introduced the games and interactive activities designed to increase student engagement. The session concluded with Edeltrudis Patrisia Soge, who explained how the book can be used effectively in both classroom and independent learning.
Following the presentation, students participated in a group discussion. They were divided into four groups, each working with a copy of the SPARK textbook. Each group was guided by one MPBI master’s student together with English teachers from SMP N 1 Kalasan, under the supervision of Mr. Markus Budiraharjo, Ed.D. During the discussion, students explored the book, shared ideas, and practiced using the materials.
At the end of the session, students were invited to share their impressions in English, reflecting on their experience using the SPARK textbook. The program concluded with a group photo session and a shared lunch, marking a meaningful collaboration between MPBI Sanata Dharma University and SMP N 1 Kalasan.
