MPBI Community Service Program: “English for Jeep Drivers at GERBANG Lava Tour Merapi”

On 7 November 2025, students of the Master of English Language Education (MPBI) Program from Sanata Dharma University conducted a Community Service Program (PKM) at Gerbang Lava Tour Merapi, Yogyakarta, through the handover of an English learning book designed specifically for jeep drivers. The program aimed to support local tourism practitioners by strengthening their English communication skills for real-life tour guiding contexts.

The activity involved 13 jeep drivers and one coordinator from Gerbang Lava Tour Merapi. As part of the book handover session, the MPBI student team introduced the learning material directly to the drivers who are expected to use the book for independent study.

The book was authored by Caecilia Lucky, Angelina Meta, Chrysthania, and Ivana Arlene, under the supervision of an MPBI lecturer, Mr. Ouda, who also contributed as a co-author. The book was developed as part of the MPBI community service initiative, with a strong focus on addressing the authentic language needs of jeep drivers who also serve as tour guides.

During the session, the MPBI students delivered an opening address, highlighting the importance of practical English skills in improving communication between local drivers and international tourists. They emphasized that the book was designed to be user-friendly and applicable to the drivers’ daily interactions with tourists.

Following the opening remarks, they explained how the book can be used for self-study. They outlined the structure of the book, which includes lessons on explaining tour routes and attractions, responding to tourists’ questions, and describing destinations around Lava Tour Merapi. The materials cover grammar focus, contextual vocabulary building, speaking practice, pronunciation exercises, and guided dialogues tailored to tourism situations. To further support autonomous learning, the book is complemented by audio files that the drivers can listen to while studying independently.

Several drivers actively engaged with the session by asking questions about the book’s content, how to use the exercises, and specific English expressions relevant to their work. Some participants immediately began reading the book and exploring the materials during the activity.

Beyond the formal session, the event continued in a warm and friendly atmosphere as the students, lecturer, and drivers shared food together and took photographs to commemorate the occasion. The interaction reflected mutual appreciation and enthusiasm for the collaboration.

Through this Community Service Program, the MPBI team hopes that the book will be easily accessible for jeep drivers and effectively support their English learning needs in real tourism contexts, ultimately enhancing visitors’ experiences at Lava Tour Merapi.
