MPBI Community Service Program: “English for Future Healthcare”

On 20 November 2025, MPBI students from Sanata Dharma University launched the book “English for Future Healthcare: A Practical Guide for Nursing Students” at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Panti Rapih (STIKES Panti Rapih), Yogyakarta. They developed the book as part of a community service activity in the course “Material and Program Design,” and they introduced it directly to the students who will use it in their learning.
This book was authored by Alfira Fanny Kuswandari, Ndayisenga Jean d’Amour, Akbar Mandala Arya Putra, Galuh Valentio, and Paulus Kuswandono. It presents a task-based curriculum tailored to clinical and academic healthcare contexts.
The event began with an opening address by the MPBI lecturer, Dr. Paulus Kuswandono, who briefly introduced the program's purpose and emphasised its role in bridging language learning with real medical practice, in the presence of STIKES Panti Rapih students and their lecturer, Mr. Wisnu.
After the introduction, Alfira and Jean explained the book's main content and how they will use it in the learning process.
The book is organised into five thematic parts: Beyond the Classroom, Integration & Fluency, Foundational Knowledge, Active Language Skills, and Awareness & Readiness. It also covers eight chapters: Understanding Your English Language Skills, Self-Assessment: Identifying Your Strengths and Weaknesses, Mastering the Art of Oral Communication, Enhancing Effective Reading and Writing Skills, Expanding Your Vocabulary in Context, Grammar Essentials for Healthcare Professionals, Interactive Practice for Fluency, and Continuing Language Development.
The chapters guide students from self-assessment to more developed language use in healthcare contexts. Alfira and Jean explained the key activities in the book, including medical terminology practice, listening tasks, QR code scanning, reflection, medical scenarios, and other supportive exercises. Following that, the students asked questions about the book and its application.
Beyond the formal academic session, the participants shared food and drinks with all students. The atmosphere was further enriched by the presence of two supportive classmates from the MPBI program, Yohanes Bagas and Simron Krisnuarjati Hindom, who joined in celebrating this meaningful achievement.
