Exploring Dualism through Discussion Forum I: Enjoy Your Symptom!

fordis 1
“Many heads, many perspectives” is an expression to describe the dynamics of the academic environment. Every student harbors anxieties and discomforts that are not always easy to express. Therefore, surveys or suggestion boxes (Kopsi) serve as a bridge to voice various perspectives, including the hidden anxieties and hopes that have long been concealed. Based on the survey results, issues related to Facility Adequacy and Nepotism have become the primary concerns for students. These concerns were then raised through the Palliative Society as an initial platform for broader discussions. Through the Discussion Forum, students' voices will be heard in a two-way interactive space with faculty members.

The discussion forum titled “Enjoy Your Symptom!” organized by the Dewan Perwakilan Mahasiswa Fakultas Psikologi (DPMF) at Sanata Dharma University was held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in Room Drost, 4th Floor, Central Building, Campus 3, Sanata Dharma University.fordis 2 The event was opened by Gloria as the emcee (MC), followed by a prayer, singing of the Indonesian national anthem and the Sanata Dharma hymn, and opening remarks from the Dean of the Psychology Faculty, the Vice Chair of the DPMF 2025, a
nd the Governor of the DPMF 2025 in succession. To provide the initial context for the discussion, Commission C, as the responsible party, presented the results of the Kopsi, which
served as the basis for this discussion, namely: 1) Adequacy of Facilities, related to the expectation of providing air conditioning (AC) in every classroom and water dispensers on every floor, and 2) Nepotism,
related to transparency in organizational recruitment and committee selection. Thus, these two issues became the core of the discussion between st
udents and faculty members throughout the event. To create a conducive disc
ussion environment, Dr. Aquilina Tanti Arini served as the moderator for the event. The discussion was opened by Dr. Tjipto Susana, who raised confusion rega
rding the connection between the concept of a palliative society and comfort in the classroom.
“People in palliative care are always looking for comfort, which is why students sometimes become lazy to work harder and reluctant to experience more difficult moments,” said Dewa in response to this confusion. Considering Dewa's statement, it can be concluded that an environment that is not conducive to learning can cause significant discomfort and anxiety for students. However, providing facilities does not necessarily guarantee better results. This is because excessive comfort can potentially reduce the motivation to learn in class, which ultimately reflects in suboptimal results.

Moving on to the next topic, nepotism often becomes an issue that attracts the attention of students. In this context, nepotism is associated with the recruitment system of organizations and committees, which is perceived as not providing equal opportunities for all students. Cleo, as the Governor of BEMF 2025, clarified this perspective by stating that the committee is willing to provide feedback to students who did not qualify, as part of efforts to develop their potential and abilities more effectively. Additionally, the results of interviews with candidates also tend to have a significant impact in determining the selected participants.
