Call for Abstract

In the past, our ancestors looked to the sky in search of guidance for their everyday life. The celestial movements of the sun, moon, and stars not only served as an astronomical compass but also sparked curiosity, ignited imagination, and fueled a relentless drive for exploration. These celestial wonders also inspired art, knowledge, and innovation. In Indonesia, we find traces of our ancestors 'space exploration' in seasonal calendars, rituals, and artifacts spread across the archipelago.

Today, our perception of the sky has evolved. With a deeper technical understanding of planets, the solar system, and galaxies, we've even sent robots to explore other planets and into deep space to further our astronomical knowledge. Yet, knowledge about the sky and space now concerns only a few scientific fields, no longer part of something essential in our everyday life. In an era marked by challenges such as climate change, conflict, violence, disasters, and famine, for many, space exploration may appear irrelevant.

But is that true? Didn’t our ancestors set an example of how important the sky and space were to their everyday lives? Have we lost our cosmic consciousness?

For the International SETI Conference #6 2024, we invite you to reflect on the relationship of our generation with the sky and space by submitting your abstract.

Submitted abstracts can be considered for oral presentation during the conference, and post-conference publication.

This conference is organized by the Indonesia Space Science Society (ISSS), The Doctoral Program in Cultural Studies (Arts and Society Studies) Sanata Dharma University, and Lembaga Indonesia Perancis (IFI) Yogyakarta.

  • One abstract can be submitted by one (1) up to four (4) authors.
  • You can choose one of the abstract topics.
  • Your abstract title should be short and informative.
  • Your abstract body must not exceed 200 characters.
  • The first sentences should provide the background of the work. This should be followed by the experimental details, with a conclusion of one or two sentences. The abstract body should be presented as one single paragraph – do not use paragraph returns or subheadings.
  • Reference citations should be given where previously published results are presented. Up to three citations are permitted.
  • Please add the author's and institution's information on a separate page from the abstract body (1 file, different page).
  • Send your abstract to seti.abstract@usd.ac.id
  • Submitted abstract can be considered for oral presentation during the conference.
  • Accepted abstract will be published in a post-conference publication.

Abstract submission deadline

July 13, 2024

Assessment

  • Abstracts will be assessed by Symposia Chairs.
  • Notification of outcomes of assessment for oral presentation, and confirmation of acceptance of abstracts, are expected to be available in mid-July 2024.

About the symposium

This is a symposium which invites participants whose work is on the horizon of the known, from various fields, across science, the arts, astrophysics, astronomy, space science, humanities and other less traditional fields of study. We come together to share our experiences of confronting the unknown, and the impact of the unknown on culture and imagination. Participants are also encouraged to bring any experiments or works they have made that may create encounters with the unknown, in a form that others may interact with. It will also be an opportunity for an experiment in the unknown that will be run during the symposium, with participation from attendees.
